Monday, March 2:
Again R. did not have a good night, but he works all the same. Splendid spring weather; I take Daniella to the elementary school to be registered, and deep within myself pray to God that she may perform the pious act of improving herself. Lunch alone with R.; afterward he goes to look for Herr Feustel, who has now returned from Munich. He returns home in a despondent mood, and tells me that friend Feustel has not been to see Diiffl. because of the unpleasant treatment he had received at their last meeting; Prof. Hoffmann’s demands were unclear and carping, and Brandt has made none at all; on top of all this, the King is in debt. God knows what lies ahead of us!
In the evening R. reads to me from the Pictures of German Life.
