Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 3, 1874

Overview

The day moves between spiritual reflection and nervous wit, with a moving passage about Christ, a joke about “world asthma,” and R.’s sense that he is being kept alive by unreliable successes and royal favor. Even short walks leave him agitated, while the newspapers bring more signs of an unsettled public world.

Content

Saturday, January 3:

From Claudius’s Wandsbecker Bote R. reads me a passage about Christ which is really fine and moving. Our friend [Malwida] speaks of a child of Atma that has just been born, which leads to a witty remark from R. about world asthma.

He goes for a walk, comes to me in the conservatory, but is still weak and agitated at the same time. “What am I living on?” he asks. “My operatic successes and the bounty of a King who does not want to understand me.” We read in the newspaper that the prince is having things in Versailles copied for himself. In the evening continued with Luther.
