Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 12, 1873

Overview

Lulu's birthday is observed as warmly as circumstances allow, with gifts and treats, though the mood remains quietly sorrowful. In the afternoon Marie Schleinitz arrives by train and brings lively news about Hans's playing, even while describing his unstable temperament and his claims to have saved a fortune for his children. She is sympathetic about their difficulties, but their own situation clearly casts a shadow over the visit, and a letter from Rome only adds to the family's reflections on the celebrations taking place there.

Sunday, October 12:

Lulu's birthday; we celebrate as best we can with gifts and treats, and in my heart with melancholy blessings! In the afternoon we go to the railroad station to meet Marie Schleinitz, who, in her charming way, is paying us a visit. She has just seen and heard Hans in Munich and tells us wonderful things about his playing, but he is still capricious in his moods; he boasts, however, of having put aside a fortune for his children!

Our sympathetic friend wants to know all about our situation here, but what we have to tell her does not make very pleasant hearing. Letter from my father in Rome, with the program of the festivities; R. says it is like Kagnd Kokr—everything.
