Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 16, 1873

Overview

The outside world seems distant, and the household continues in a repetitive rhythm of family lunch and visits to the house. There is a decision to avoid exterior ornament and trust instead in proportion and simplicity. Even the mention of a scholarly honor for a friend folds back into the recurring world of artistic and intellectual labor.

Content

Wednesday, July 16:

Always the same, nothing from the outside world, except for a commission for a little composition for an illustrated periodical in America.

Family lunch, then to the house as usual. Decision not to put any outward decorations on it, but to keep it simple and leave everything to the proportions.

In the evening Uhland. (Our friend Kietz has been awarded a doctorate by the University of Tübingen for his Uhland monuments.)
