Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 27, 1873

Overview

The central tension is whether to go to Weimar for the performance of Christus, and no one can quite settle the matter. The decision swings back and forth through visits, lunch, and a walk, until it depends on the writer’s sleep and condition. Even the practical telegram does not resolve the emotional indecision. The day ends without clarity, only a sense of wavering resolve.

Content

Tuesday, May 27:

The big question now is whether we shall go to Weimar for the performance of Christus. Neither of us wants to say a definite yes or no. R. writes a page of his score and sends a telegram to say we are not going.

The Ritters come to lunch. Long reflection over whether we should not go after all. R. goes for a walk with Ritter, and returns home having decided that we shall go if I have had a good night’s sleep. Evening of indecision.
