Friday, November 1:
Lovely autumn weather. Sent Boni to school, so that our journey will not interrupt her studies. The people in Vienna do not reply, and now the contracts should be settled. Hope to God that we are not facing wretched disappointments!
In the morning continued sorting the children's things. Boni returned from school highly pleased; it is to be hoped she will become more lively intellectually there. R. has a final discussion with Brückwald.
At three o'clock to the railroad station; Marie Muchanoff had sent a telegram announcing her arrival. She comes from Munich, very tired and agitated; she says Tristan had much affected her; it had gone very well under Bülow's direction. She tells us all sorts of curious things about Hans, which do not surprise me. On one occasion, she says, he would be extremely cordial, on the next downright rude, so that one never knew quite how to approach him.
All kinds of things about the German Empress, of whom she has seen much and whom she loves dearly. She spends the evening with us and dismays us with her restlessness.
