Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 2, 1872

Overview

They escort their friend to the station and are left worrying about when they will see her again. The dean receives a small offering and the conversation turns to the German church, while R. returns from legal business irritated by Vienna’s silence. At supper, alarming reports about the King stir fears of insanity and political danger, though the speaker tries to keep R. from brooding over predictions. The evening circles back to their recent communion, which R. remembers as intensely powerful and beautiful.

Saturday, November 2:

To our friend early; accompanied her at 11 o'clock to the railroad station, where R. joins us. When shall we see our poor friend again? We are concerned about her.

I visit the dean in order to give him a small offering for his people, and stay talking with him for quite a while about the German church. R. visits the law courts in connection with the Düsseldorf theater director and returns home very annoyed by the incomprehensible silence in Vienna.

At supper we discuss the news which Marie M. brought us concerning the King, which is very alarming; among the people there is already talk of insanity, and on top of that the King's hatred of Prussia, his only protection! I beg R. to put all worries on this score out of his mind, since predictions of a catastrophe can neither improve nor alter the situation.

Later R. comes to the subject of our holy event: "How beautiful it was in that little vestry, how powerful the voice of our dean sounded, like the voice of a lion emerging from a cave! What substitute could there be for the feelings aroused in one when the indescribably moving words 'This is my body' are spoken?" The monotonous sound of the Liturgy also touched his heart. "I could almost say, if I did not shrink from the word in this connection, that it all made an artistic impression, even the little acts of pouring wine, etc."

Afterward we talked about the children: worries!
