Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 16, 1872

Overview

A concert planned in Berlin to support Bayreuth annoys R., especially because it includes music he does not want excerpted from his works. News from the Fantaisie and from Feustel makes the practical situation worse, forcing a decision that they should spend the summer there instead of elsewhere. The day ends with fatigue, political obstacles, a troublesome horse, and R.’s odd dream about cheering for the King’s brother, while the coming separation weighs heavily on the writer.

Tuesday, April 16:

A telegram came yesterday from Marie Schl.; the Berliners are giving a concert for Bayreuth and wish, to R.’s annoyance, to include the “Magic Fire Music” and “Siegmund’s Love Song.” Letter from the landlord of the Fantaisie: R. cannot easily get out of his commitment there, and since the climate here does not agree with him and he is also required in Bayreuth for a conference, he decides that we shall spend the summer at the Fantaisie. Feelings of melancholy.

Letter from Herr Feustel: the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior has forbidden the governmental architect to concern himself with the erection of our theater! Herr Neumann impossible, because of his unreliability and negligence. To town with R. Grane a bad horse; he has kicked Joseph. The head equerry knew what he was doing when he sent the horse to us!

In the evening we read Menzel. R. is not well; the only thing that cheers him up is the dream he had last night, from which he was awakened by a cheer. From the bottom of his lungs he had called for three cheers for “the brother of the King, our future Emperor,” since he felt not enough enthusiasm was being shown. The separation from him weighs like a ton on my heart; he is going on Saturday and I follow with the children on May 1.
