Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 17, 1872

Overview

The grey weather deepens an already sad mood as R. prepares to leave and the household helps where it can. He tries to console them by saying that their separation is only a preparation for reunion. Spring blossoms, the cuckoo is heard, and the children’s antics with sticks briefly lighten the day, though there is also concern that Lulu has been dishonest again.

Wednesday, April 17:

Mood of sadness in dull weather; R. prepares for his departure, I help where I can. We feel depressed. Where are we going, what is in store for us, where is our home? R. says, “Since I have you, the worst can no longer affect me; we are no longer separating, we are just preparing for our reunion.”

In the afternoon we take a short walk; all the trees are in bloom or soon will be: “Nature has been scattering face powder, green and white.” R. hears the cuckoo. Concern about Lulu, who, we believe, has again been untruthful. Fairy tales in the evening. We were much amused by Fidi with two sticks, carefully preparing revenge against Bernhard.
