The Brown Book

Diary Entry of March 6, 1870

Overview

A humorous dedication links Lohengrin's reception in Brunswick with the restorative virtues of sausage. Wagner pairs it with Luther's thirst and Einbeck beer to turn the occasion into a comic German maxim.

Content

Sunday, March 6:

Braunschweigt Wurst für Lohengrin
Zu Worms ein Krug Einbecker Bier,
der labte Luther’s Durst;
Held Lohengrin nach dem Tournier
zu Braunschweig stärkt’ ihn Wurst.
Daraus nehm’ Jeder sich die Lehr’:
Und wenn die Welt voll Teufel wär’,
hilft ihm das Bier vom Durst,
dem Deutschen ist Alles dann Wurst!

Brunswick Sausage for Lohengrin

At Worms a mug of Einbeck beer
slaked Martin Luther’s thirst;
Brave Lohengrin, the tourney o’er,
was refreshed by Brunswick sausage.
Of which for each the lesson is:
though the world be full of devils,
beer helps to take the thirst away,
then no German cares a sausage!
