Diary Entry of August 25, 1867

Overview

Birthday verses for Ludwig imagine solemn bells sounding from Monsalvat. Wagner connects the people's celebration with renewed courage and the strengthening of a king's will.

Sunday, August 25:

And again I hear portentous bells,
from Monsalvat their sound comes, holy, solemn:
Greets Parzival the people’s jubilation?
Exults Germany for its most Kingly Son?
Sound and echo fill the immediate stillness:
thus courage swells, thus a King’s
will grows! —
