The Brown Book

Diary Entry of August 22, 1867

Overview

In a short poem, Wagner laments that Cosima no longer hears his voice or recognizes his appeals. He fears that supplying the rational proof she demands would destroy what matters between them.

Thursday, August 22:

Sie hört nicht meine Stimme mehr
wenn ich Ihr Alles sage —
Sie sieht nicht meine Blicke mehr
wenn ich ihr Alles klage —
Auf mathematische Beweise steht
ihr Sinn —
Geb’ ich sie ihr, wär’ dann nicht
Alles hin? —

She hears my voice no more
when I tell her all —
She sees my looks no more
when to her I pour out all—
On mathematical proof
her mind is set —
Were I to give her it, would not then
All be gone? —
