Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Emil Heckel

Undated · Bayreuth

Overview

Wagner calls Reichenberg a decided acquisition and asks who recommended two lady singers at Bremen, hoping one might meet him at Hanover on 11–12 April. Reichenberg's report on Unger's intonation has made him fearful of the tenor, but he still wants Knapp.

Letter

Dear Friend,

Many thanks for Herr v. Reichenberg: he's a decided acquisition, both for now and the future.

Who recommended you the two lady singers at Bremen? I might perhaps get one of them to come to Hanover, where I shall be stopping on Sunday and Monday — the 11th and 12th April — for sake of the tenor. Could you effect some such thing?

The accounts which Reichenberg gave me of Unger, as concerns his voice, were not favourable; if he cannot keep to a single note, I can never teach it him. I'm getting afraid of him.

I wish for Knapp in any case. Berlin concert — 24th April: — God knows!

Best greetings from your

Richard Wagner.
