Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Emil Heckel

May 10, 1875 · Bayreuth

Overview

Wagner asks for Unger to be sent to him, thinking he could teach him Tannhäuser for Vienna, and regrets that Knapp seems lost. He urges Heckel to find more Patrons: money for this year's rehearsals is short, and the builder is devouring everything.

Letter

Most honoured Friend,

Do but send me Herr Unger! I've a good idea regarding him, especially for himself. If I see that there's anything to be done with him, I shall teach him the Tannhäuser for Vienna, where he then might get engaged. Right!

Is it all over with Knapp then? I'm sorry.

Patronise well! We are badly off, and I hardly know where to procure the money for this year's rehearsals! Everything costs more than was anticipated, and Runckwitz [the builder] devours all!

Hearty greetings!
Your

Rich. Wagner.
