Wagner's Letters

Cosima Wagner to Emil Heckel

July 11, 1872 · Fantaisie, near Bayreuth

Overview

Cosima gladly joins the Mannheim Wagner-Verein and asks Heckel to remind her when her dues fall due. She says Wagner would be delighted to stay with the Heckels, asks whether she could come too, and reports that the theatre is going up briskly.

Letter

Dear Herr Heckel,

With all my heart I join the Verein; you must remind me of my duties, that is to say, the time when I have to fulfil them.

Wagner would accept your very kind offer with great delight — but, dear Herr Heckel, would you be able to take me in as well? Not that I want anything at all out of the way, but I do not know how you are off for room in your dwelling, and whether your good wife will care to receive two guests for one.

The building of the theatre goes briskly on, and the Magistrates' recent — and most solemn — permission to sell sausage on the premises, has afforded us much delectation. Hearty greetings from house to house!

Cosima Wagner.
