Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Friedrich Feustel

November 4, 1875 · Vienna

Overview

Having caught cold in a poor hotel, Wagner is now comfortable at the Hotel Imperial and resuming rehearsals. He reports that the royal residence in Bayreuth will be reserved for royal guests, the King of Bavaria yielding his own suite should the Emperor come.

Letter

Dearest Friend!

I have taken cold and am exhausted and kept back by the bad accommodations in the hotel decided upon beforehand. Since yesterday, however, I am well taken care of in Hotel Imperial, and expect to continue the rehearsals to-morrow.

For to-day only the information, as briefly as possible, that it is settled that the royal residence in Bayreuth shall be left for the royal guests; if the Emperor should come, the King of Bavaria would give up his own suite; as for the rest, nothing but the most distressing complaints and disclosures about—the well-known conditions.

This is what I wanted to write you. Now remain faithful to me, as I shall always remain grateful to you.

Cordially yours,

Richard Wagner.
