Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Theodor Muncker

October 31, 1873 · Bayreuth

Overview

On the day of the delegates' conference, Wagner sends the burgomaster sample copies of Nietzsche's Manifesto for distribution to the arriving delegates and asks how to learn who has come, so that he can plan his dinner-table despite his lack of servants.

Letter

Dearest Burgomaster!

Here are sample copies of a Manifesto drawn up by Professor Nietzsche, and which I wish distributed for temporary cognisance to the delegates who have arrived and those yet to come.

Who can best look after this matter? In fact, how can I best learn who has arrived? (I have also to bear in mind the dinner-table, in regard to the number of covers.) At present I know of only Nietzsche, Heckel, Ballingad, and M. du Moulin. Unfortunately I am much embarrassed by my lack of servants.

Pardon me and remain kindly disposed toward

Yours most respectfully,

Richard Wagner.
