Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Friedrich Nietzsche

June 9, 1874 · Bayreuth

Overview

A brief, playful note written the moment Nietzsche's latest melancholy letter arrived, begging him to stop holding himself aloof and come to Bayreuth, where his room is ready, while anticipating every excuse he might make.

Letter

O friend,

Why do you not come to us?

I can find an excuse for everything—or whatever you like to call it.

Only don't hold yourself so aloof! If you persist in doing this I can do nothing for you.

Your room is ready.

However—or, on the contrary: Nevertheless! or yet: "if it must be"!

Written the moment after your last letter arrived.

More another time.

Cordial greetings.
