Richard Wagner to Minna Wagner

September 6, 1859 · Lucerne

Overview

Wagner tells Minna that he has declined Tichatschek's suggestion of a fresh petition to the King, and complains that Lüttichau, after the recent Lohengrin performance, has done nothing to help him.

Letter

[...] I have been in frequent correspondence lately with Tichatschek. He begged that I would draw up a fresh petition to His Majesty for pardon and present it through Privy Councillor Behr. My reply was that I could think of nothing new to say to the King, and, as everything I had already said, or caused to be said, to him had achieved no response but contemptuous silence, I could not believe that the King expected to hear from me again. But it does not occur to him. Well, at least I have reminded him through Tichatschek that the honorarium for Lohengrin should certainly, and with my consent, be set off against the large advance to me which remains unpaid. Only, properly speaking, he should have come to an agreement with me as to the amount of the honorarium, for I am no longer in his service and it was for me to assess the value of my works, etc. But these people continue to behave so discourteously and disrespectfully to me that I really have no wish to take the least notice of them outside the question of my rights. The——take the lot of them! [...]
