Wagner's Letters

Luise Brockhaus to Anton Pusinelli

February 15, 1866 · Dresden

Overview

Returning Wagner's letters of 6 and 9 February, Luise Brockhaus thanks Pusinelli for showing her that the core of her brother's heart is tender and good, rages at the Munich Volksbote's slanders about Minna's support, and offers to publish a rebuttal in the family's Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung.

Letter

Receive my heartiest thanks, very respected Herr Doctor, for the letters entrusted to me and returned herewith!! You have done me much good through this!!! The core of my brother's heart is tender and good, and that is expressed again in these letters and makes him seem quite lamentable to me!! Would that God might grant this vehement nature a friendly and peaceful destiny while he is still here below, one satisfying to his inner soul!!!

The lines of the Munich Volksbote have made me furious!! In this also you have looked out and managed for Richard in as kindly a way as ever, certainly, and you have set your face, just as you have deemed it advisable, against these vile things which, with much swaggering, attach the mantle of truth about themselves! Nevertheless, there will not be much of avail there, for where the wish to reap only evil things is so much in evidence, in order to be able to sow again for a further growth, there the clean grains of truth will find little consideration!! Nevertheless, perhaps I, through the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, could still report something of some kind? So please very kindly let me know your view regarding this!

Give my most earnest regards to your dear family and be assured once again of the very sincere thanks for all your goodness, from your

Respectfully devoted,

Luise Brockhaus
