Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Carl Voltz

April 5, 1876 · Bayreuth

Overview

Still unconvinced that his claims are "imaginary," Wagner nonetheless affirms his trust in Voltz's honesty and authorizes him to deal with municipal theatres for Tristan on a 25 per cent commission for twenty years.

Letter

Dear Herr Voltz!

The enclosure I herewith am sending you again draws my attention to a matter which I still cannot understand. You will still have to convince me of the "imaginary" character of my claims. I continue to rely on your honesty, which I have never for a moment doubted. On the other hand, some interpretations of your rights and claims still do not make sense to me.

Concerning Tristan und Isolde I authorize you to deal with all municipal theaters as my agent, receiving a commission of 25 per cent. This relationship shall last for twenty years; after that all rights shall revert to me or my legatees.

Sincerely yours,
Richard Wagner
