Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Ernst Benedikt Kietz

October 10, 1859 · Paris

Overview

Newly arrived in Paris, Wagner teases Kietz about the "mattress" keeping him in Épernay and announces that he has taken an apartment at 16 rue Newton for three years, with Minna expected the following month.

Letter

Tell me, unworthy man and libertine, when will you ever sever yourself from the arms of your mattress? (My wife claims to know that you are keeping one now.)

I have rented an apartment for three years, 16 rue Newton, avenue des Champs Elysées, and shall move there on the 15th inst. I expect my wife to come here around the middle of next month. If you can make up your mind to come to Paris, you now know where to find me, which you can best do any forenoon until two o'clock.

God bless you!
