Wagner's Letters

Richard Wagner to Minna Wagner

March 5, 1855 · London

Overview

A hurried first note from London, where Wagner has come to conduct the New Philharmonic Society's season: Praeger has dragged him round the city on visits, a lodging has been found, and he begs Minna for news.

Letter

Oh, my dear good Mienel!

Don't be angry with me because I can write you only two lines today! I'm leaving the dinner table to let you know, before the mail goes out, that I've been here since yesterday and that everything is going all right so far. But what a city!! Praeger did not rest until I had first made the necessary visits, and I rode through the city with him in all directions so that I'm really more than exhausted; but above all I literally have not yet found a moment's quiet to write you even a line! Today we also looked for a lodging and were at last fortunate in finding one where I want to move in and get settled. Tomorrow I'll use my first spare time to write you more fully! Only I didn't want to leave you without news again today. So be content with these very warm greetings and believe my assurance that I now long for news from you very much; don't let me wait any longer!

Well then, farewell for today, dear good old wife! I'm terribly excited—but not unpleasantly so. Praeger is very kind and obliging, the directors very pleased; I don't even know who they all were that I visited. And now to close!

Farewell and many regards to our friends.

Your very good
Husband!
