Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 3, 1871

Overview

Cosima sends a substantial sum to Joachim through Bucher's care, while Wagner works himself weary. The day includes business letters for Bayreuth and Standhartner, an inscription in Siegfried for Bratfisch, and a drive with the children. Wagner also brings home Hans's Beethoven edition, apparently sent through Cotta, adding an ambiguous family and musical object to the household.

Content

Friday, November 3:

Very nice letter from Marie M. I send 10,000 francs off to the banker Joachim and beg L. Bucher to see he takes great care of them. R. works till he is weary. I go for a drive with the children.

R. writes letters to Dr. Standhartner and Herr Feustel in Bayreuth; business affairs, in short. Then an inscription in a copy of Siegfried for Bratfisch. Inscription based on wordplay omitted as untranslatable, but see notes. From town R. brings Hans's Beethoven edition, which Cotta was instructed to send him, probably by Hans himself!
