Thursday, April 8:
R., very unwell, has been told to expect the arrival of the stage director Hallwachs from Munich. I write to the King. At 12 o’clock lunch, and then departure with a heavy heart, since R. looks wretched. I feel more and more clearly how much a separation of even an hour upsets us both; it is really almost impossible.
In Zurich met the children, an afternoon of joy. They are changed and look unwell, though not really ill. A cheerful journey home.
R. still run down, though very satisfied with his conference; the machinist Brandt is understanding and inventive. Everyone to bed.
Great concern over the note Hermine gave me: Hans is ill, for the most part through annoyance over the eternal torments. He no longer visits the school or conducts the orchestra.
News from Paris; the success seems to have been great. Also Mme Mendès has written another very good article, “Richard Wagner—Liberté.”
