Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 22, 1871

Overview

The day is filled with letters and business, including Wagner's trip into Lucerne to see Schleinitz. Marie Schleinitz visits in the afternoon, and some Siegfried passages are reviewed before a tired evening with Carlyle. Cosima is especially disturbed by Marie's report that her father believes he has never caused her sorrow.

Content

Tuesday, August 22:

Wrote many letters; R. to Councilor Duefflipp. Around noon he drives into Lucerne to visit Herr von Schleinitz.

In the afternoon a visit from Marie Schleinitz; a few passages from Siegfried gone through. In the evening read Carlyle. R. and I are both tired.

I was affected by a conversation with Marie Schleinitz, particularly by what she told me about my father: he claims never in his life to have caused me any sorrow!
