Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 15, 1871

Overview

Storms and thunderous weather match Cosima's melancholy mood, despite the welcome confirmation that Richter has secured the Pest conductorship. She continues copying for the King, but the lack of news from the committee feels ominous. The entry is dominated by a fragile sense of happiness and the fear that silence from outside may signal trouble.

Content

Tuesday, August 15:

Terrible storm and melancholy day. Thundery showers. Letter from Richter; he has definitely been engaged as conductor in Pest. This is good. What is not good is the despondent mood which possesses me; well, happiness, like glass, is fragile.

Copy for the King. Nothing from outside, not even from the committee, which strikes us as ominous.
