Sunday, July 16:
Fidi was today given his new outfit, which he will now wear all the time: a shirt and vest with collar, with it a leather belt and pouch. He looks lovely in it.
At breakfast, conversation about a letter from Luther to the musician Ludwig Senfl; R. says it will be of great use to him. Yesterday evening R. said to me, “By marrying me, you seem to me to have entered a nunnery; all your qualities are now lost to the world.” “I have indeed entered a nunnery,” I reply, “but one I chose for myself, and which delivered me from the world and purified me.”
Lunch with the children on the terrace, all in nice, gay spirits. A drive with the children; I, since our accident, filled with fear. In the evening R. reads Das Liebesverbot. His first volume is too thin, and he wonders whether to include his youthful works in it. However, he finds them too childish. In his latest book Herr Julian Schmidt disposes of R. Wagner in four or five pages. Anguish of heart.
