Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 30, 1871

Overview

Judith's letter gives a horrible account of Paris, renewing Cosima's contempt for French public life. She answers Claire and Judith and reads Hartmann's revised play, recognizing talent while finding the work unpleasant and the author tactless. Sultry heat is relieved by a good letter from Brandt that proves their worries about him unfounded.

Content

Friday, June 30:

Letter from Judith, describing the horrible state of things in Paris. A dreadful, unprincipled nation. I write to Claire and to Judith, and also go through Herr Hartmann’s new play; it reveals much talent, but I find it unpleasant, and he himself seems rather tactless.

Sultry heat, but a good letter from the machinist Brandt; all our worries were unfounded.
