Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 29, 1871

Overview

A deluge and Richard's bad night are offset by Brandt's reassuring telegram about the theater machinery. Claire's letter reports Cosima's mother's renewed derangement, prompting Richard's bleak comment on her parents. Fine weather, a garden lunch, an evening walk, and a warm letter from Clemens Brockhaus steady the day.

Thursday, June 29:

R. had a very bad night; the rain was coming down in a deluge. But Herr Brandt has sent a telegram; it seems everything is all right. Letter from Claire: my mother has become deranged again. “Your father and mother do not bring you much joy,” R. observes.

Family lunch; in the garden again, the weather is fine. R. could not do much work. In the evening, a walk. Very nice letter from Clemens Brockhaus.
