Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 16, 1871

Overview

The return to Tribschen is filled with impatience, then tears, presents, and play once the family is reunited. Loulou and Boni show their joy openly, while Fidi appears sturdy and well. Richard's bedtime words to Cosima seal the day as a return to his true world and to complete domestic bliss.

Tuesday, May 16:

Going home! Great impatience to get there; dull weather. At 2 o’clock we at last arrived! Loulou and Boni weeping for joy, the little ones quieter, Fidi magnificent, plump and sturdy, all well.

Family lunch and then distribution of presents; played the whole afternoon and evening. At bedtime R. says to me, “Remain kind to me, you dispenser of bounty.” Feeling of utter bliss to be back in his world.
