Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 28, 1871

Overview

A forged newspaper article about Beethoven and the unauthorized printing of the Ride of the Valkyries provoke Richard's anger and thoughts of legal action. Cosima urges restraint on one front, while he writes to Eckert and Schott about the publishing offense. Bad weather, a visit to Countess Bassenheim, and evening talk with Cosima's mother complete the day.

Content

Tuesday, March 28:

A Silesian newspaper has published an article about Beethoven; the deliberate forgery puts into R.’s mind the idea of a “distraint,” and he intends to prove the forgery, but I beg him to ignore it.

We also found out recently that the “Ride of the Valkyries” had been printed and sold in Leipzig; R., very indignant, writes to the conductor Eckert and to his publisher Schott, so that the latter may take the necessary steps with regard to this indiscretion.

Wretched weather. We drive to Countess Bassenheim’s; she is very friendly, but a little agitated. In the evening chatted with my mother.
