Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 15, 1871

Overview

Frau Wesendonck's account of anti-German disorder in Zurich makes the unrest feel close and threatening. Richard finishes the Kaisermarsch and sends it to Berlin, while Cosima writes letters amid sick children and dreary weather. Judith Mendes's conciliatory letter and evening Gibbon soften the day somewhat.

Content

Wednesday, March 15:

Frau Wesendonck writes about the rowdy scenes in Zurich, which forced them to leave their villa for two nights and will perhaps persuade them to give up the city entirely.

R. finishes his Kaisermarsch and sends it off to Berlin. I write to my mother and to Frl. v. Meysenbug. The children all unwell, on top of the dismal weather.

Letter from Judith Mendes; she is nice and friendly and admits she was unjust. In the evening, Gibbon.
