Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 20, 1869

Overview

An abusive Breslau letter and an ugly drawing from the King arrive as snow renews the contest between winter and spring. Cosima worries over a troubling expression in Loldi's eyes and remains suspended without word about whether she will see the children. Evening dictation follows inspection of Odysseus's house plan, giving the day a scholarly close despite inner uncertainty.

Content

Saturday, March 20:

The mail brings nothing but an abusive letter from Breslau, the third from there, and a large drawing, Sachs and Eva, from the King. Unfortunately this is very ugly.

R. does a little work; I am doing my embroidery and busying myself with the children, when I notice a peculiar expression in Loldi’s eyes which worries me; it seems like a touch of deceitfulness.

Snow is falling again; spring and winter are locked in battle, likewise the evil and good spirits of my fate. I still do not know whether I shall see the children again!

In the evening dictation, after we had inspected the plan of Odysseus’s house.
