Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 4, 1871

Overview

A favorable answer about costumes is offset by the King's inquiry about Siegfried, which immediately burdens Richard. Cosima tries to support him, while letters and reflections on Paris, German symbols, and Berlin celebrations reveal her mixed patriotic feelings. Richard's illness seems tied to the pressure of royal expectation.

Content

Saturday, February 4:

Letter to me from Councilor Duflipp; my request regarding the costumes has been granted, but at the same time a letter to R., saying the King is asking about the score of Siegfried. This puts a great weight on R.'s spirits.

When I express my sorrow at being so helpless in the matter, R. says, "Your love is my token, in questo signo vincei."

I write to Marie M. that the bombardment of Paris is barbaric, but a consoling token of the highest moral courage.

We are sorry that the colors of black, red, and gold have not been accepted for the flag, and also that they had to sing the Wacht am Rhein at the peace celebrations in Berlin.

R. unwell, certainly as a result of that letter!
