Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 13, 1870

Overview

Cosima answers Marie Muchanoff while doubting that a visit will actually happen. A walk with Wagner takes place in a fierce foehn, which she suspects is worsening his health. Their evening reading of Don Juan strengthens their shared disgust at the age and taste that could produce such work despite real talent.

Thursday, October 13:

From M. Muchanoff, to which I reply; I scarcely think she will come. Walk with R., terrible foehn storm, which is probably responsible for R.’s feeling unwell. In the evening continued with Don Juan; we agree that times are wretched when such things can be written by a highly talented man. (Letter to Tausig with a photograph, and to Marie Much.)
