Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 11, 1870

Overview

Cosima resumes correspondence by inviting Muchanoff to discuss Bayreuth and asking Heigel to influence fashion through the Bazar. Parisian political news appears to her as confused rhetoric, with speculative schemes such as a Franco-Belgian union seeming fanciful. A family lunch reunites everyone after days of illness, and Henry IV closes the evening.

Content

Sunday, September 11:

I get up early and write to Marie M[uchanoff], inviting her in R.’s name to come soon, in order to discuss Bayreuth. Then to Dr. Heigel, who sent us congratulations; since he is editor of the Bazar, I have requested him to start a new fashion. The news from Paris is always personal and drolly confused—phrases, nothing but phrases. The possibility has been mentioned of joining France to Belgium, that is to say, the Belgian dynasty should rule over both countries—a splendid thought, but a little far-fetched. Family lunch, for the first time in days all together again. In the evening Henry IV.
