Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 26, 1869

Overview

Letters from the children and Frau Marenholtz bring contact from outside while Cosima inks the score, writes to Boni, and searches papers with Richard. The original row then moves into news that Berlin wants Die Meistersinger, letters from Hans and the King about Tannhäuser, hopes of gathering everyone at Tribschen, and Richter's possible Easter visit. Gibbon, Loldi's alarming palpitations, and Antony and Cleopatra add gifts, maternal fear, and literary unease to the combined entry.

Content

Friday, February 26:

Letters from the children and good, sympathetic Frau Marenholtz. While with the children, inked in the score; in the afternoon a walk by myself. In the evening with the children, and wrote to Boni. After tea searched for papers with R.

Saturday, February 27:

Letter from Eckert; they want to do Die Meistersinger in Berlin, and Herr von Hülsen acts as if he had never before negotiated with R. In the afternoon a letter from Hans about the performance of Tannhäuser in Munich, enclosing a letter from the King, who had not in fact attended the performance, but all the same writes full of enthusiasm.

I with the children almost all day. R., happy about the letters, says he can still see us all reunited and assembled here, my father, Hans, etc. Would Heaven but grant it; I cannot believe it. Hans Richter announces a visit at Easter; perhaps I can arrange for the children to visit me with him. R. has given me Gibbon, in English, as a present.

Richard thinks I must be Loldi’s daughter, owing to the liveliness of my feelings. This reminds me of the terrible shock I had yesterday when Loldi, after a mild scolding, had such violent palpitations and got into such a state of agitation, her face glowing, that I feared the worst and saw my child already dead!

Read one act of Antony and Cleopatra with R.; strange feeling of discomfort.
