Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 11, 1870

Overview

Cosima watches the sunrise alone on Pilatus and receives it as a peaceful, majestic impression. Fatigue from the ascent and crowded lodgings leaves the party spending the day quietly among Alpine roses, trying to recover lost sleep. The first part of Dichterleben is finished and judged formally awkward but compositionally interesting.

Content

Monday, July 11:

Watched the sunrise by myself, great and peaceful impression.

Otherwise we are very tired, the ride had wearied us, and rest was not possible during the night on account of the many guests. We take a walk across loose stones to a meadow covered with Alpine roses, settle ourselves down there, and the day passes in an attempt to make up our lost sleep. Finished reading the 1st part of Dichterleben; though in form it is awkward and ungainly throughout, we find the whole composition nevertheless very interesting.

Early to bed.
