Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 10, 1870

Overview

With Loulou recovered, the family finally sets out for Mount Pilatus in fine weather and high spirits. The ascent becomes a release from care, with love and high air transforming the journey into a near-sacred experience. The solitude, stillness, moonlight, and children’s merriment evoke for Cosima the atmosphere from which Wagner imagined the gods of the Ring.

Sunday, July 10:

Since Loulou has now recovered, we decide on the outing. Nice Italian article about Die Meistersinger in Weimar. Family lunch. At 4 o’clock drive to Hergiswyl in very fine weather, from there the ascent of Mount Pilatus, a veritable caravan with guides, porters, sedan-chair attendants, the student, Richter, Jakob, and the two big girls. A gay ride; with the ascent a gradual alleviation of cares, love alone holds sway and manifests itself in the high, pure ether. Sublime impressions of stillness and solitude; on such impressions he based the life of the gods in the Ring des Nibelungen. Lovely moonlight on the Pilatus peak. The children merry.
