Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 13, 1870

Overview

Fine weather refreshes the household as Cosima teaches and Wagner sketches. A small discord caused by Cosima’s remark reveals how intolerable even slight disunity has become between them. The student’s decision to abandon theology for natural science, Countess Bassenheim’s dying prince, and Wilhelm Meister make the day a study in vocation, mortality, and reconciliation.

Monday, June 13:

Nothing from outside except beautiful weather, which refreshes us very much. Work with the children; R. at his sketches. In the afternoon a clumsy remark by me leads to slight discord; I almost feel grateful for the episode, since on such occasions we realize all the more strongly that we cannot bear the slightest lack of unity between us.

The student informs me that after long struggles he has given up theology and with it his scholarship, in order to devote himself to natural science, an almost heroic decision in his circumstances. In the evening to Countess B.’s, the Prince is nearing his end. Back home, W. Meister.
