Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 12, 1870

Overview

The morning with Nietzsche and Rohde includes a visit to the Lion of Lucerne while Wagner works at home. At lunch Wagner is lively, skewering musicians as unsuitable for conducting in their present training and habits. After the guests depart, beautiful weather, moonlight, and Wagner’s reading of the Mignon scene from Wilhelm Meister give the day a graceful close.

Content

Sunday, June 12:

Breakfast all together, then with our guests to the Lion of Lucerne, while R. works. At lunch R. is very lively and good-humored; he starts talking about musicians, “who are wild beasts, not educated creatures, very close in fact to actors. To demand of our present-day musicians, with their quintets, trios, cantatas, etc., that they conduct, is like suddenly demanding from a writer of novels that he play comic roles.”

At five o’clock we accompany our guests to the railroad station; then home; glorious weather, lovely moonlight; after supper W. Meister, R. reads the scene between Mignon and Wilhelm wonderfully (the egg dance).
