Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 24, 1882

Overview

Buddha, thunderstorms, and anxious thoughts about friends trapped by weather frame a day that is otherwise gentle and companionable. R. is happiest in a gondola beside Cosima and in hearing Buddhist teachings that refuse speculation about first or last things.

Sunday, September 24:

R. was up once in the night for a fairly long time, but after that he slept well. In the morning he tells me several things from Buddha, including sayings about women, taken from the book he is now enjoying. Around midday he goes for a shave and returns home by gondola. After lunch we have a thunderstorm, which upsets us, because we think of our dear Schleinitzes held captive in Bolzano. We go to the H. de l’Europe, R. and I, then to Lavena’s; R. is feeling well and tells me he is always cheerful when he goes for a ride with me (the children at the time in the public baths). In the evening he reads to us and then gets me to read some very fine things from Buddha, in which he is pleased to note that Buddha never wished to talk about the beginning or the end.
