Saturday, September 23:
R. had a good night, but he has a spasm in the morning. His pleasure in our lovely dwelling he expresses in this melancholy way: “Lovely is it everywhere, till Richard comes with all his care!” Herr Hausburg’s announcement that he will be able to come to us is agreeable in that it gives us a bit more time for the Glasenapps, but even this disturbs R. — He reads Faust and quotes what the Arch-Chamberlain says to the Emperor, “If thou but read my heart, I’m honoured as is meet,” saying it is quite extraordinary, and he is pleased with all the subtle strokes in the battle, etc. R. and I go out around 5 o’clock, walk to the confectioner’s (Lavena), and ride home in a splendid sunset, which is followed by bright moonlight. R. spends the evening quietly by himself, since he is feeling very run down (he made two errors of diet, beer and champagne, in the past few days).
