Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 22, 1882

Overview

Another wretched night is followed by legal contracts, wedding confusion, casting quarrels, and new appeals from Materna, all of which R. must absorb while still refining Kundry's psychological turn. He ends the day with a late supper and no real relief.

Content

Tuesday, August 22:

R. had a very wretched night, and he gives expression to his annoyance regarding the evening receptions. In the morning I have the contract to read through and sign. But the wedding difficulties still continue! At 4 o’clock we drive to the theater, where R. again finds things to vex him in the rivalry of the two Gurnemanzes, and also an appeal from Frau Materna, from whom, it seems, Vienna is trying to withdraw the role of Isolde. But she pleases R. with her correct grasp of the turning point for Kundry (2nd act). He gets the same good impression behind the scenes altogether. He has supper very late.
