Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 20, 1882

Overview

Rain, casting rivalries, and fresh telegrams from Palermo keep the household in a whirl, yet R. still finds real pleasure in Fräulein Brandt's expression and in the attention of the idle performers during the third act. Domestic confusion and stage commitment continue to coexist uneasily.

Sunday, August 20:

Rain! At breakfast Rub. with his father, who looks entirely un-Semitic, and this makes R. suspect that his family, like so many heathen ones in Russia, assumed Judaism, and the men then married Jewesses. At 4 o’clock to the theater, where unfortunately R. is faced with vexations, Herr Scaria curtly insisting that the casting problem should be decided in his favor, and Herr Siehr not prepared to give way. But he is pleased with Frl. Brandt’s truly enraptured look in the 2nd act, and during the 3rd act he is in the orchestra and also on stage, where he is pleased to see everyone, even those who at the moment have nothing to do, following it all with keen attention. At home Biag. has received a telegram from his brother, saying that the marriage will be null and void if no public notice is given in Palermo, something which has not yet been done, deliberately, it seems.
