Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 5, 1882

Overview

A chest spasm, ticket-distribution scandal, and Liszt's departure darken the day so badly that R. cannot bear meals with others and half forgets the angry letter he wrote in the night. By evening, left alone at last, he takes refuge in ghost stories and temporary amusement.

Content

Saturday, August 5:

R. is very tired and is troubled by a chest spasm. Between 3 and 4 in the morning he wrote to friend Gross, having read a report in Herr Lessmann’s music periodical about the poor distribution of tickets, which upsets him greatly. My father’s departure also arouses very great anger in him, and I am obliged to have both breakfast and lunch today without him. Friend Gross comes in great agitation to defend himself; R. has already half forgotten what he wrote during the night. In the afternoon he receives Frl. Malten to tell her a few things; and in the evening, since we are entirely alone, I tell him some of the stories now circulating in Bayreuth about spirit rapping, and these amuse him. He has sent repeated telegrams to his friend Sulzer, inviting him to the performances!
