Thursday, August 3:
R. had a somewhat restless night and is not feeling well. Lunch with the Schons and Frl. Malten takes place without him, though he comes to join us. After having spent several hours in the garden, he feels somewhat better in the evening, and at the reception he comes down and sits by the stove (to the right), among the Flower Maidens, with whom he jokes. In the morning he received a very nice letter from Wilhelmj. For me the day brought an examination of a tutor for Siegfr., recommended by friend Standhartner; unfortunately he will be impossible to combine with friend Stein, since his character is so utterly different from the North German one.
Friday, August 4:
The wretched weather continues! For late breakfast at 12 we have the Dannreuthers, both of whom R. likes. At 4 o’clock the performance with Herr Jager and Frl. Malten, the latter with very lovely, lively accents, but still somewhat immature. R.’s mood is one of great excitability, but he is always pleased with the diligence of his singers. He proclaims his thesis: “Here on my stage anarchy reigns: everyone does as he wishes, but each wishes well.”
