Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 22, 1882

Overview

Another overtired rehearsal day is redeemed by Scaria's superb aged Gurnemanz and by a long, careful explanation of Kundry's nature. R.'s imagination remains fully alive, but the body carrying it is clearly near its limit.

Saturday, July 22:

R. slept but talked a lot in his sleep. He frequently cites to me a joke of Hoffmann's about the madman who rose very gently as the moon but, when he wished to rise as the sun, became wild and frenzied.

We have rehearsals; Scaria appears as the aged Gurnemanz and is quite superb. R. had said 80 in the first act, 90 in the last. During the entr'acte we all eat in the restaurant. We spend some time by ourselves on our return home, with Stein and Levi. R. gives a detailed description of Kundry's character, but during it I have the feeling that he is overtired.
