Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 21, 1882

Overview

Fatigue overwhelms both of them, and R. can only marvel at the sacrifices the festival has demanded. Even so, he drives to rehearsal, speaks of Gobineau and Alexandria, and lets tears show when he sees how much has been given up for the work.

Friday, July 21:

R. slept well, but we are both very tired; he goes so far as to suggest in fun that at such times I might come to detest art! We have a very cheerful family lunch; R. talks a lot about Gobineau. Previously he spoke about the carnage in Alexandria.

After lunch I visit our friends the Glasenapps, return home, and in my weariness fall asleep in the salon; when I awake, R. is sitting beside me (around midday he came up to my room to ask whether I was still alive), there are tears in his eyes, and he says very gently, “What sacrifices we are making!” We drive to the rehearsal (orchestra, Gudehus, Siehr). In the evening whist is played in the hall, while R. refreshes his memories of Bakunin with Malwida.
